Jijoca de Jericoacoara

Jijoca de Jericoacoara is a municipality on the coast of Ceará in northeastern Brazil, where dunes and beaches shape the landscape. The territory runs along the Atlantic and protects wide stretches of natural coastline between the ocean and the mainland.

Spanish explorer Vicente Yáñez Pinzón reached the bay in 1499 during his voyage along the South American coast. Centuries later, the area evolved from a remote fishing village into a protected coastal zone with growing importance for tourism.

The name comes from Tupi language and means

Access is through a regional airport that opened in 2017 and connects to larger cities. Sandy roads run through much of the town center, so light footwear and preparation for windy coastal conditions are recommended.

Many streets in the main town are made of sand rather than pavement, giving daily life a relaxed rhythm. Fishermen still pull in their nets in the early morning, while local routines revolve around the tides of the Atlantic.
