Jijoca de Jericoacoara

Jijoca de Jericoacoara extends over 204 square kilometers of coastal territory, featuring sand dunes and beaches along the northern edge of Ceará state.

The area was first documented by Spanish explorer Vicente Yáñez Pinzón in 1499, who anchored his ship in the bay during his South American expedition.

The name derives from Tupi indigenous language words îurukûá and kûara, translating to 'lair of turtles' due to the local marine life presence.

The municipality operates under postal code 62598-000 and can be accessed through the Jericoacoara Airport, which opened its facilities in 2017.

The region maintains a population density of 96.8 inhabitants per square kilometer while preserving extensive natural coastal landscapes and traditional fishing activities.
