Maclear's Beacon, Stone cairn beacon on Table Mountain, South Africa
The triangular stone structure stands 5 meters tall at the eastern end of Table Mountain plateau, marking the highest point at 1,086 meters above sea level.
Sir Thomas Maclear established this trigonometrical beacon in 1844 for measuring Earth's circumference, leading his assistant William Mann to construct the monument.
The beacon represents a significant achievement in South African scientific history, combining astronomical research with geographical measurements in the Victorian era.
Visitors can reach the beacon through multiple hiking trails from the cable car station, with a moderately challenging walk taking approximately one hour on the plateau.
The structure required restoration in 1979 after its collapse in 1929, coinciding with the centenary of Thomas Maclear's death.
