Green Point Common, Public recreational area in Green Point, South Africa
Green Point Common is a large public green space in Cape Town, South Africa, featuring sports fields, walking and cycling paths, and planted gardens near the Cape Town Stadium. The grounds are divided into several zones, each set aside for a different type of outdoor activity.
The land served as a military ground in the early 19th century and was previously known as Waterplaats, where the Dutch East India Company grazed cattle. Over time it shifted from military and agricultural use to the open public space it is today.
The biodiversity garden displays plants native to the Western Cape region through information stations and walking routes where visitors can learn about local flora. This display helps people understand the variety of plants found in the area.
The grounds are open from early morning until evening and are easy to reach on foot, by bike, or by car, with parking nearby. The paths are clearly laid out, making it straightforward to move between the different activity zones.
Part of the grounds holds a biodiversity garden dedicated to plants native to the Western Cape, with information signs placed along the walking routes. This area tends to be overlooked by visitors who come mainly for sport, but it offers a quieter corner to explore.
