Sesriem, Settlement in the Namib Desert, Hardap Region, Namibia
Sesriem is a small settlement in the Hardap Region that serves as the primary gateway to Namib-Naukluft National Park, located approximately 334 kilometers southwest of Windhoek in the Namib Desert.
The name Sesriem comes from Afrikaans meaning six thongs, referring to late 19th-century Dorsland Trek settlers who tied six pieces of rawhide together to lower buckets into the canyon for water.
Indigenous Khoisan tribes, including the San and Topnaar people, have used Sesriem's water sources for thousands of years, harvesting resources and surviving in the harsh desert environment through specialized knowledge.
The settlement provides essential services including fuel stations, small shops, campsites, and lodges that support visitors exploring nearby Sossusvlei dunes and Sesriem Canyon, with access through gravel roads requiring proper preparation.
Sesriem Canyon stretches about 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) in length and reaches depths of up to 131 feet (40 meters), carved by the Tsauchab River over millions of years through sedimentary rock layers.
