Neetlingshof Estate, Historic wine estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa
Neethlingshof Estate is a winery in Stellenbosch reached by a tree-lined avenue of stone pines and centered on a traditional Cape Dutch manor house. The property includes extensive vineyards where visitors can taste wines and walk the grounds.
The estate was founded in 1692 by Willem Barend Lubbe and originally named De Wolwedans after the jackals roaming the surrounding Bottelary Hills. Over the centuries it developed into an established winery that continues producing wine today.
Maria Marais built the manor house in 1814 and added six flowers to the gable as a personal symbol for herself and her children. This detail lives on in the estate's Six Flowers wine, which honors the family that shaped the property.
Visitors should allow time to walk through the vineyards and explore the historic manor house architecture. Be aware that opening hours vary by season, so checking ahead helps plan your visit better.
The estate uses spotted eagle-owls for natural pest control, with birds nesting in specially built posts throughout the vineyards. This ecological approach has inspired a wine label called The Owl Post.
