Skuinshuis, Provincial heritage building in Stellenbosch, South Africa
Skuinshuis is a two-story building on Ryneveld Street displaying Georgian architectural features such as a raised parapet with molded cornice and round cast iron vents. The structure has a central entrance with a fanlight in an arched plaster frame, multiple windows, and a tiled front porch.
This building was constructed in 1782 as a T-shaped farmhouse beside an old wagon trail and received its distinctive facade design in the early years of the 19th century. The modifications occurred before the town established its present street layout.
The Hebrew congregation acquired this property in 1923 and used it as a meeting place for Jewish community gatherings and religious activities in town.
The building is located near a synagogue and is easily accessible from the town center. Visitors should note that this is a protected heritage site and interior access may be limited.
The building sits at a location predating the town's planned street layout that was established in 1811. Its position offers a glimpse into the original settlement pattern before this major town redesign took place.
