Huguenot Monument, Memorial site in Franschhoek, South Africa

The Huguenot Monument features a central female figure holding a Bible and broken chain, standing above three arches representing the Holy Trinity.

Dutch architect J C Jongens designed the monument in 1943, with South African sculptor Coert Steynberg creating the female figure for its 1948 inauguration.

The monument includes French symbols such as the fleur-de-lis, alongside agricultural elements representing the Huguenot contributions to South African farming and viticulture.

The monument and adjacent memorial museum provide educational exhibits about French Protestant refugees who settled in the Cape Colony between 1683 and 1756.

Water features in front of the monument create mirror reflections of the granite structure, which incorporates Calvinia slate paving stones throughout the site.
