Hottentots-Holland

Hottentots-Holland is a mountain nature reserve in Western Cape featuring extensive hiking trails and multiple peaks. The landscape includes high plateaus, deep gorges, and river valleys that together create complex terrain for exploring.

The area was traversed by Europeans in the early colonial period who built trade routes through the mountains. These pathways still show traces of wagon traffic from the 19th century carved into rock formations.

The name comes from early European settlers referring to the Khoi people who lived here. Visitors walking through the mountains can observe how this heritage shapes the landscape and the stories told about the region.

The best time for hiking is during the drier months when trails are easier to navigate. Visitors should prepare for demanding terrain and bring plenty of water and gear for sudden weather changes.

A famous section popular with experienced hikers combines trekking with jumps into natural mountain pools. This route is technically demanding and showcases the dramatic topography of the area.
