Roodepoort, Mining city in Gauteng Province, South Africa

Roodepoort is a mining city on the western edge of Johannesburg, situated at approximately 1,740 meters elevation. The city extends from industrial areas in the east through residential neighborhoods in the west, connecting different sectors of the wider metropolitan area.

The city began in 1884 when the Struben brothers discovered gold deposits and founded a mining settlement in the area. It gained municipal status in 1904 and developed as a regional mining hub from that point onward.

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden within the city showcases South African plants and trees in their natural settings, drawing locals and visitors who come to walk the grounds and learn about the region's plant life.

The area has several shopping centers such as Clearwater Mall and Westgate Shopping Centre where visitors can shop and spend time. Most places are easy to reach by car, as the city is well organized and laid out.

A memorial west of the city marks where British administrator Leander Starr Jameson surrendered to Boer forces in 1896. This historical moment often goes unnoticed by visitors, though it played a significant role in South African history.
