Sentech Tower, Broadcasting tower in Brixton suburb, South Africa
Sentech Tower is a broadcasting tower in Johannesburg, built from reinforced concrete with a circular base roughly 26 meters across. It carries the full transmission infrastructure needed to send radio and television signals across the region.
The tower was built between 1961 and 1962 by Christiani and Nielsen SA and was at the time the tallest structure on the African continent. It held that position only briefly, as the nearby Hillbrow Tower was completed not long after and rose higher.
The tower broadcasts radio and television programs that reach millions of South Africans daily. It serves as a key piece of the city's media infrastructure that connects people across the region.
The tower stands in Johannesburg and is easy to spot from a distance since it rises well above the surrounding area. There are no publicly accessible levels inside, so a visit is limited to viewing it from the outside.
The upper mast can lean up to 2 meters from vertical during strong wind without affecting the stability of the structure. This movement is not a flaw but a deliberate design choice that allows the mast to flex rather than resist rigidly.
