Sentech Tower, Broadcasting tower in Brixton suburb, South Africa
Sentech Tower is a broadcasting tower in Johannesburg that stands 237 meters tall with a reinforced concrete structure. Its circular foundation spans 26 meters in diameter and supports the entire transmission infrastructure for radio and television signals.
The tower was constructed between 1961 and 1962 by Christiani and Nielsen SA and initially held the title of Africa's tallest structure. It later lost this distinction when Hillbrow Tower was completed and rose higher above the city.
The tower broadcasts radio and television programs that reach millions of South Africans daily. It serves as a key piece of the city's media infrastructure that connects people across the region.
The structure is equipped with two Volvo generators providing 1 megawatt of backup power to keep broadcasting operations running without interruption. Visitors should be aware that the tower can experience movement during severe wind conditions while remaining structurally sound.
The upper mast can lean up to 2 meters from vertical during extreme wind conditions while remaining completely stable. This flexibility is an intentional design feature that allows controlled movement rather than rigid resistance.
