King Shaka International Airport, International airport in La Mercy, South Africa
King Shaka International Airport is an international facility in La Mercy, about 22 miles (35 kilometers) north of Durban, handling flights from across Africa and other continents. The building stretches across two levels and separates arrival and departure zones clearly, so operations run in an orderly manner.
The facility opened in 2010 to replace the old Durban airport and accommodate larger aircraft as well as more passengers. Its location was chosen largely because of the upcoming soccer World Cup that South Africa hosted that year.
The name honors the early Zulu king who left a lasting influence in the region and whose legacy remains rooted in local identity. Travelers arriving often notice traditional decorations and patterns drawn from the crafts of KwaZulu-Natal that shape the terminal environment.
Travelers reach the facility via the N2 freeway or the R102 road, and several thousand parking spots stand ready on site. Shuttle buses connect the terminals with nearby cities, and the interior remains accessible throughout for people with limited mobility.
Flight paths were adjusted to protect a colony of barn swallows that breed each year near Mount Moreland and are watched during their migration. This precaution shows how conservation concerns can be woven into daily flight operations.
