The Oyster Box is a luxury hotel on the Umhlanga coastline featuring two outdoor swimming pools and direct access to a private beach section. The property sits on expansive grounds along the Indian Ocean with multiple guest areas and facilities.

Oyster Lodge was built privately in 1863 with teak, corrugated iron and reinforced concrete. In 1952 Ken and Kay O'Connor, a brother and sister, bought it and ran it as a tea garden, then a restaurant, before opening it as a hotel in March 1954. Stanley and Bea Tollman of Red Carnation Hotels bought the hotel from Wayne Reed in 2006 and renovated it from 2007 to 2009.

The hotel's name comes from the oysters once gathered along this stretch of the Indian Ocean coast. Its restaurant, the Ocean Terrace, serves a curry buffet, and the Grill Room prepares dishes such as seafood and game. The Pearl Room, where Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco held their wedding reception in July 2011, is named for its pearl-toned decor.

The hotel stands on the uMhlanga coastline just north of Durban, facing the Indian Ocean; its grounds hold two outdoor pools and a private beach section. The Umhlanga lighthouse, of which the hotel is official custodian, is nearby. Guests arriving from King Shaka International Airport can ask the concierge desk, staffed around the clock, for help with orientation and planning.

The hotel serves as official custodian of the Umhlanga lighthouse and is the only hotel featured in the South African Monopoly board game edition. These two distinctions connect the property to both local heritage and popular culture in a way few other places can claim.
