National Heritage Monument, Commemorative monument in Groenkloof Nature Reserve, Pretoria, South Africa
The monument features life-sized copper statues of historical figures who shaped South Africa, including activists, traditional leaders, and religious representatives. The figures are arranged in chronological order, beginning with leaders from the 1600s.
The project started in 2010 and the first sculptures were unveiled in 2015, showing key moments in South Africa's path to independence. The collection has been continuously expanded to include important figures from different eras.
The statues represent figures from different moments in South African history, from resistance leaders to liberation heroes. Visitors encounter representations of people who fought for justice and freedom across centuries.
The monument is located within a nature reserve and allows visitors to walk through the collection and view the sculptures from different angles. The site offers open pathways and a natural setting that makes the visit comfortable.
Eventually up to 500 statues are planned, which will make this one of the largest outdoor sculpture collections in southern Africa. The ambitious expansion project will allow more historical figures from different parts of the country to be honored.
