Groenkloof Nature Reserve, Protected area in Pretoria, South Africa
Groenkloof Nature Reserve is a protected area in Pretoria covering about 600 hectares of grassland and woodland that stretches through the Apies Valley. The landscape includes natural vegetation, native trees on hillsides and in valleys, plus trails and mountain biking routes through varying terrain.
The reserve was established in 1895 as the first game sanctuary in Africa, created specifically to protect oribi and other wildlife. This founding marked the beginning of formal wildlife protection on the continent.
The name comes from the green hills that shape the valley, and it recalls early settlers like Lucas Bronkhorst, whose homestead traces remain visible today. Local people use the space to connect with nature, walking its paths and experiencing the South African landscape.
Access is available from early morning until sunset, with exact hours varying by season. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since trails can be uneven and bring plenty of water, especially in warm weather.
The reserve is home to over 120 bird species, including rare types like Swainson's spurfowl and weaver birds that nest along the Apies River. This diversity makes it a paradise for those searching for less familiar species.
