Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History

The Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History occupies a former South African Mint building and displays archaeological finds, historical documents, and artworks spanning different periods. The collection includes Stone Age artifacts, Iron Age figurines, and other objects that document human development across the region.

The institution was founded in 1895 and later relocated to the Mint building where it operates today. In 1999 it merged with the Transvaal Museum and Military History Museum, forming what is now called the Northern Flagship Institution.

The display features Iron Age figurines and rock art that reveal early spiritual practices and social structures of the region's ancient inhabitants. You can see how these objects reflect the beliefs and daily customs of communities that thrived here long ago.

The museum is open daily and provides free parking for visitors. Students and school groups benefit from reduced admission rates, and the galleries are easy to navigate on foot.

The Marabastad exhibition presents photographs and personal items documenting how different communities lived together before the apartheid era. This collection offers a rare glimpse into daily life and neighborhood relationships during that historical period.
