The 52-square-kilometer island features coastal areas, inland swamps, forested dunes, and reaches an elevation of 104 meters at Mount Inhaca point.

British forces controlled the island from 1823 until 1875, using it as a strategic base to monitor and prevent slave trade in the region.

The 6,000 residents maintain traditional fishing practices, with women collecting seafood during low tide and men operating boats for deep-sea fishing.

Ferry services operate from Porto de Pesca in Maputo every Saturday and Sunday, departing at 8:00 and returning at 15:00 to the mainland.

The marine biological research station, established in 1951, studies the surrounding waters that contain coral reefs, dugongs, dolphins, and sea turtles.
