Gaborone, Capital city in southern Botswana.
Gaborone is the capital city of Botswana in southern Africa, positioned between Kgale and Oodi Hills near the Notwane and Segoditshane Rivers, roughly 15 kilometers from the South African border. The city spreads across a relatively flat landscape with wide streets, low-rise buildings, and scattered modern office towers in the business center.
The city was founded in 1964 when British authorities chose this location as the capital during preparations for Botswana's independence from British rule. The site was selected for its central position, proximity to the railway line, and availability of water.
The city takes its name from Gaborone, a leader of the Batlokwa community who settled here in the 19th century. Locals shop at markets around the central Mall area and gather in the shopping centers, where commerce and daily life intersect.
The city center is walkable, with government buildings, shops, and the museum located close together in the downtown area. The Gaborone Dam on the southeastern edge provides a place for walking and non-motorized water sports.
The Three Chiefs Monument was created by North Korean artists and depicts the 1885 journey of three leaders to London to request British protection. This unusual collaboration between Botswana and North Korea resulted in several monuments around the country.
