National Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Gaborone, Botswana.
The National Botanical Garden spreads across several hectares along the Notwane River and is divided into different zones representing the country's distinct ecological regions. The grounds display the diversity of native plants, from trees to shrubs that naturally occur throughout Botswana's various landscapes.
The garden was founded in 2007 as the first botanical institution in Botswana. It operates under the Natural History Division of the Botswana National Museum and serves to preserve local plant species.
The garden preserves a historic morula tree where the first meeting of the Botswana Democratic Party took place. This tree remains a quiet witness to the country's political beginnings for those who visit.
The best time to visit is in the morning when it is cooler and the plants look refreshed from watering. The paths are easy to walk on foot and there are shaded areas, but bring plenty of water with you, especially during hotter months.
The garden features rare tree species like the Sausage Tree from the Chobe region and the Wild Date Palm from the Okavango Delta. These plants are difficult to see outside their natural habitats and give visitors a glimpse of Botswana's different ecosystems without traveling far.
