Kgale Hill

Kgale Hill, hill located in Gaborone, Botswana

Kgale Hill is a large granite formation near Gaborone known as the Sleeping Giant because of its shape resembling a resting figure. The hill rises over 1000 meters and offers broad views from the summit across the city and surrounding plain, with rocky slopes dotted with grass and low vegetation.

Local communities have used the hill for generations as a landmark and gathering place, with its name reflecting past dry conditions in the region. During earlier regional conflicts, the hill served as a watchpoint where leaders and soldiers could observe approaching people or threats.

The hill holds meaning for local residents as a gathering place and symbol of community pride, with its Setswana name reflecting the area's dry conditions from the past. On weekends, families and friends come together here for outdoor activities and celebrations, showing how the site remains woven into daily life in Gaborone.

The hill is easily reached by bus from the main station or by taxi, with routes passing through parts of the city before walking to the park entrance. Wearing comfortable shoes is important since the trail is uneven and steep in places, and you should bring plenty of water as there are no facilities along the way.

The famous King of the Hill race is held annually on the hill, with runners covering about 15 kilometers on a course that passes by shopping centers, loops around the quarry, climbs the hill, and returns to the start. This event brings runners and spectators together each year, making the hill an important sporting venue in Gaborone.
