Mweru Wantipa National Park

Mweru Wantipa National Park is a protected area in northern Zambia containing a mix of wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands that create distinct habitats. The landscape centers on Lake Mweru, a large shallow water body fringed with papyrus reeds and surrounded by open terrain.

The park was established to protect the wetland system and its wildlife after the region faced growing pressure on natural habitats. The composition of animal life shifted over time, with some species declining while others found refuge in its protected waters and reed beds.

Local fishing communities work the waters of Lake Mweru using traditional methods passed down through generations, creating a living connection to the landscape.

Access is challenging and requires sturdy vehicles and solid planning, as infrastructure remains minimal in this remote location. Visitors should book accommodations and arrange transport well in advance to ensure a successful visit to the park.

The park shelters the Sitatunga antelope, a rare wetland specialist adapted to swampy ground with splayed hooves that prevent sinking in soft mud. This elusive animal is difficult to spot but its presence highlights the ecological importance of the protected area.
