Lumangwe Falls, Waterfall in Mporokoso District, Zambia
Lumangwe Falls is a waterfall in northern Zambia where the river drops about 40 meters into a deep gorge, flowing across a broad rock face. The surrounding landscape features dense forest and rocky banks that give the river its powerful appearance.
Initial development plans for the site began in the 1970s but initially failed. A turning point came in the 1990s when agreements with local communities allowed further use.
The name refers to a spirit snake that, according to local stories, flows between this waterfall and another one five kilometers away. Visitors can sense how the landscape is treated with respect for this tradition.
Access is via an unpaved road that branches off from the main route and requires a capable vehicle. There are two viewpoints at the site where you can see the falls from the riverbank.
The river area below the falls is home to a rare plant species found nowhere else in the world. This botanical rarity makes the place particularly interesting for nature enthusiasts.
