Europa Island, French territorial island in Indian Ocean
Europa Island is a raised coral atoll in the Indian Ocean surrounded by fringing reefs and bordered by coral beaches. The island contains shallow lagoons and mangrove areas that provide habitat for various marine and bird species.
British sailors charted the island in 1774 and named it after their vessel. France later established territorial claims over the island during the 1800s.
The island maintains a permanent military presence through a French detachment stationed from Reunion, operating a weather station and research facilities.
A small airstrip allows for occasional flights, and ships can anchor offshore. Access is limited and infrequent, so planning any visit requires checking conditions well in advance.
The island serves as one of the world's most important nesting sites for sea turtles and reptiles. Its remote location has preserved a specialized ecosystem with minimal human disturbance.
