Anakao

Anakao is a fishing village and beach on the southwestern coast of Madagascar where white sand meets turquoise water. The settlement sits directly along the shore with simple accommodations scattered along the coastline and small boats anchored offshore.

The village has deep roots in traditional Madagascan fishing, with wooden boats launching daily from the beach since the 1800s. These practices continue to shape the settlement and remain central to local life today.

The Vezo people of Anakao keep their maritime traditions alive through early morning fish markets and boat crafting passed down through generations. Walking through the settlement, you see evidence of this way of life everywhere, from traditional wooden boats to nets spread out for drying.

The best time to visit is after the rainy season when the sea is calmer and boat transfers are easier. Visitors should prepare for simple accommodations and bring strong sun protection and light clothing as the sun is intense.

The coral reefs around Anakao shelter rare fish species and provide snorkeling opportunities to observe intact marine ecosystems. The water here stays calm and clear most of the time, making it a surprisingly good place to explore the sea.
