Anja Community Reserve, Nature reserve near Ambalavao, Madagascar.
Anja Community Reserve is a nature reserve near Ambalavao covering 30 hectares of woodland, a freshwater lake, and granite cliffs dotted with boulders and caves. The landscape features dramatic rock formations that structure the terrain throughout.
The Betsileo people used the caves and gorges within the area as burial sites and places of shelter until the 1930s. These sites show the long presence of this community in the region.
The reserve is managed by the Association Anja Miray, which transformed former hunting grounds into a protected space while supporting local education and health initiatives.
Two hiking trails run through the reserve with routes lasting from two to six hours, and local guides are required for all visitors. The trails vary in difficulty and duration, so planning ahead helps match a route to your fitness level.
The reserve is home to Madagascar's largest population of ring-tailed lemurs, with around 300 individuals living among the rocky formations. These lemurs are particularly adapted to the rocky habitat and display remarkable climbing and jumping abilities.
