Andafiavaratra Palace, Historical palace at Upper Town, Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Andafiavaratra Palace sits on a hill in Antananarivo with large windows, a central tower, and thick stone walls forming its structure. Inside, the rooms hold furniture, portraits, and personal items of the royal family from different periods.

The palace was built in the 19th century and served as the residence of Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony during the rule of three successive monarchs. It later became a refuge for objects saved from a major fire.

The palace displays objects from Madagascar's royal history, including traditional costumes and historical documents that show how court life was lived. These items help visitors understand the customs and values of former rulers.

The palace is open daily and visitors can explore the exhibition at their own pace or join guided tours. Reaching the hilltop requires climbing stairs, so good shoes and some physical fitness are helpful.

The building became a refuge for royal objects rescued from a destroyed palace complex after a massive 1995 fire. This role makes it an important storage place for the few surviving artworks from that tragic event.
