Peyrieras Reptile Reserve, Reptile and amphibian reserve near Manjakandriana, Madagascar.
Peyrieras Reptile Reserve is a facility housing reptiles and amphibians near Manjakandriana. The animals live in large enclosed buildings along National Road N2, roughly 75 kilometers from Antananarivo, where chameleons, geckos, snakes, frogs, and butterflies can be observed.
André Peyriéras, a French entomologist, founded this facility, which originated from an exotic animal trading operation. It later developed into a conservation and research center for Madagascar's wildlife.
The reserve contributes to scientific understanding of Madagascar's endemic species through its collection of native reptiles, amphibians, and relocated lemur populations.
Visitors join guided tours through several enclosures and can watch feeding demonstrations in controlled environments for photography. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and allow time for exploring the different buildings.
The reserve houses groups of sifakas and brown lemurs that return daily to specific spots, allowing close observation of these primates. These regular visits by the lemurs offer visitors a rare chance to watch their behavior in near-natural conditions.
