Pointe du Diable

Pointe du Diable is a cape on the southwestern coast of Réunion Island where black volcanic rocks extend into the Indian Ocean and create powerful waves. The rock formations run along the coastline and produce strong surf conditions that attract wave riders.

The basalt cape formed approximately 200,000 years ago from lava flows of Piton des Neiges and continues to shape the geological structure of the coastline. This ancient volcanic activity created the black rocks that characterize the site today.

Local fishermen gather regularly at this spot to catch rock fish, keeping alive traditional fishing methods that have fed their community for a long time.

Water activities in this area are currently restricted due to safety concerns and shark presence, so visitors should heed posted warning signs. The location works better for observing the waves from the rock formations, which offer safe viewing points.

The site features a combination of black sand beaches and cliff formations that provide viewing points for observing intense wave patterns. This blend makes it an unusual setting for photographing seascapes and the raw forces of nature.
