Pitons de Terre Rouge, Summit in Saint-Louis, Réunion
Pitons de Terre Rouge is a peak reaching 386 meters in elevation on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. The summit stands in the southern part of the island and is accessible through marked hiking routes offering varying levels of difficulty.
The peak served as a natural landmark since the earliest European settlements arrived on the island in the 16th century. Its name reflects the geological history of Réunion and the volcanic origins that shaped the landscape.
The peak takes its name from the reddish volcanic rock that colors its slopes and defines the landscape. Hikers notice this distinctive coloring immediately when climbing the upper sections and observing the ground beneath their feet.
The hike to the summit takes about an hour and a half on well-maintained trails that are easy to follow throughout. Starting early in the day allows time to complete the round trip and enjoy the best light for views from the top.
On clear days, visitors can see all the way to the coast and even to other Mascarene Islands from the summit. These far-reaching views across the Indian Ocean are especially striking during early morning or late afternoon hours.
