La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes, Wildlife reserve and zoo in Savanne District, Mauritius
La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes is a zoo spread across about 3.5 hectares with separate sections for crocodiles, tortoises, monkeys, and many tropical species set within a forest-like environment. The different areas each recreate specific habitats that match the natural surroundings these animals need.
This facility was founded in 1985 on the grounds of a former vanilla plantation and initially focused on crocodile breeding. Over time it grew into a broader wildlife conservation and breeding center.
The exhibits about the extinct Dodo bird tell the story of Mauritius and its natural history through educational displays throughout the park. These displays help visitors understand how the island's ecosystems have changed over time.
The park is open daily to visitors, with animal feeding demonstrations and guided tours offered multiple times throughout the day. It helps to wear sturdy shoes and allow enough time to explore the different sections at a comfortable pace.
The insectarium collection contains more than 26,000 insect species gathered from five continents. This makes it one of the world's largest insect collections and reveals the incredible diversity of insects across different regions.
