Black River Peak

Black River Peak is the highest summit in the Black River District on Mauritius. The mountain rises steeply with thick forest coverage that gives way to exposed rock faces as you approach the top.

The peak served as a navigation landmark for ships crossing the Indian Ocean between Africa and Asia during the age of maritime trade. Its prominence made it recognizable from the ocean, helping traders establish their position.

Local residents maintain traditional practices of gathering medicinal plants along the mountain slopes, following knowledge passed through generations.

The hiking trail starts at Plaine Champagne Road where parking is available and the path is clearly signed throughout. The route is straightforward to follow even for those unfamiliar with the area.

A fixed chain assists climbers during the final push to the summit, where a simple bench marks the highest sitting spot on the island. This modest infrastructure makes the peak accessible to a wider range of visitors.
