Pont de la Rivière Saint-Étienne, Concrete bridge in Saint-Louis, Réunion Island, France.
Pont de la Rivière Saint-Étienne is a concrete bridge that crosses the Saint-Étienne River and connects Saint-Louis with Saint-Pierre on Reunion Island. The structure features four traffic lanes for cars as well as designated areas for buses and pedestrians.
The original structure built in 1993 was destroyed by Cyclone Gamede in 2007, prompting the construction of a replacement bridge. The new structure opened to traffic in June 2013.
The bridge serves as a meeting point for residents of Saint-Louis and Saint-Pierre, strengthening connections between the two communities through improved accessibility.
Traffic on the bridge is heavy during peak hours with many vehicles crossing throughout the day. Visitors should use caution near the roadway and follow marked pedestrian paths.
The structure rests on eight massive pillars that extend up to 36 meters into the ground and are reinforced with thousands of tons of steel. This deep foundation allows it to withstand extreme weather conditions.
