Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, International airport in Unguja Island, Tanzania.
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is an international airport on Unguja Island in Tanzania, located about five kilometers south of Zanzibar City. The facility includes three terminals that reflect different construction phases and functions, with the newest infrastructure designed to handle large passenger flows.
The facility was originally called Kisauni Airport and was renamed in 2010 after the first leader of independent Zanzibar. The oldest building dates from the British protectorate period and now serves as an office, while newer terminals have enabled growing connections with international destinations.
The facility bears the name of Zanzibar's first president, who played a central role in the union with Tanganyika. His name marks the post-independence era and reminds travelers of this political transformation as they arrive on the island.
The site is located close to the main city and can be reached by road heading north. International arrivals are processed in a separate section, so travelers should follow signs upon landing to find the exit and transfer options.
Terminal 2 currently handles all flight arrivals and departures, while the original colonial-era terminal continues to stand as an administrative building. This division shows how aviation infrastructure has grown without completely replacing the historical legacy.
