Hamamni Persian Baths, Persian bathhouse in Stone Town, Tanzania
Hamamni Persian Baths is a historic bathing establishment in Stone Town with separate chambers for hot and cold water, steam rooms, and shaving areas. The complex displays the typical layout of a Persian bath with different functional spaces, where visitors can still see the original room structure today.
The facility was built in the second half of the 19th century and operated until the 1920s. Architects brought Persian building techniques to the island, showing the trade connections between East Africa and the Middle East at that time.
These baths served as a social gathering place where residents came to wash and spend time together, much like a neighborhood meeting point. The layout shows how important this space was to daily life and how people from different backgrounds shared the same facilities.
Parts of the original complex can be visited, while other sections today serve as residential spaces and are not open to the public. It helps to check in advance which areas are currently open, as availability can change.
The building shows traces of repairs and changes made by different generations of residents and users over time. These layers tell the story of how the structure was repeatedly adapted and reused as people needed it.
