Kilimanjaro International Airport, International airport in Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro International Airport connects northern Tanzania with destinations across the country and beyond through a runway stretching over two miles (3.6 kilometers). The airstrip lies nearly 3,000 feet (894 meters) above sea level and handles aircraft of many sizes.
The airport opened in December 1971 with funding from the Italian government totaling thirteen million dollars. Toward the end of the 1990s, management shifted and the site became the first privately run international airport on the African continent.
The airport functions as an entry point for visitors exploring Tanzania's natural reserves, including Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and Serengeti National Park.
The terminal offers check-in desks and baggage collection areas along with a few shops and options for onward transport by road. Travelers heading to distant reserves or mountain routes will find transfer services and information for continuing their journey.
In 2014 the Netherlands and Tanzania launched an improvement project worth thirty-five and a half million euros to expand capacity. The work aimed to double the number of passengers and upgrade existing facilities.
