Ngurdoto Crater, Volcanic crater in Arusha National Park, Tanzania
The Ngurdoto Crater measures 3.6 kilometers in diameter with 100-meter-deep walls containing a swampy floor covered in dense vegetation.
European explorers discovered the crater in the early 1900s, and in 1907 a German family named Trappe acquired extensive land on the mountain.
The crater region serves as a traditional territory for Masai communities who maintained control over these lands before the establishment of protected areas.
Five established viewpoints along the rim road provide observation opportunities, with the Leitong point offering views toward Mount Kilimanjaro at 1824 meters elevation.
The crater floor contains two merged depressions, indicating the presence of dual volcanic cones that collapsed when their magma chambers retreated.
