Ol Doinyo Orok, Mountain summit in Kajiado Central, Kenya
Ol Doinyo Orok is a distinctive peak in Kajiado Central with a triangular shape pointing north toward the Tanzanian border. The mountain reaches approximately 2,550 meters and stands out clearly in the surrounding landscape as a notable landmark.
The mountain forest reserve was established in 1979 to protect the area and reduce illegal activities. Since then, logging and charcoal production have significantly decreased in this protected zone.
The mountain serves as a vital water source for Maasai communities across the region, especially during dry periods. Natural water catchments in its valleys feed streams that flow year-round to support settlements below.
The area offers trekking opportunities and is accessible via standard coordinates, though it receives minimal tourist traffic. Visitors should arrive well-prepared and gather local information beforehand, as tourist facilities are limited here.
Above 1,700 meters, a cloud forest hosts plants and animals not found in the dry lowlands below. This elevated habitat shelters leopards and rock hyraxes adapted to the cooler mountain conditions.
