Furtwängler Glacier, Alpine glacier on Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
The glacier sits near the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at an elevation of 5,800 meters, covering an area of 1.1 hectares in 2018.
The glacier received its name from Walter Furtwängler, who completed the first ski descent from Kilimanjaro's peak with Siegfried König in 1912.
The glacier represents one of the last remaining ice formations in Africa, marking the intersection between equatorial climate and high-altitude environments.
Between 1979 and 2007, the glacier surface decreased from 113,000 to 35,000 square meters, demonstrating the effects of climate change.
Scientists discovered a large hole in the glacier's center in 2006, which expanded into a divide, splitting the formation into two sections.
