Credner Glacier, Alpine glacier on Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Credner Glacier is an ice formation on the northwest slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, extending between elevations of 5500 and 5800 meters. The ice appears as a distinctive white band flowing down from the Northern Ice Field above.
The glacier was part of an extensive ice cap covering Kilimanjaro's summit during the 1800s when European explorers first documented the mountain. Since then the ice has diminished substantially.
German Earth scientist Carl Hermann Georg Credner contributed to geographical research, leading to the glacier being named in recognition of his work.
This location requires a multi-day mountain climb with specialized equipment to reach. Visitors should allow time for proper acclimatization and assess their fitness realistically.
The ice on the northwest-facing side receives more direct sunlight than other ice formations on Kilimanjaro because of its slope orientation. This causes the glacier to melt more rapidly than comparable ice masses in other positions.
