Uganda Railway, Colonial railway line between Mombasa and Lake Victoria, Kenya
The railway spans 1,060 kilometers through Kenya, connecting the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa to Lake Victoria at an elevation gain of 2,000 meters.
The British colonial government officially opened this railway line in 1903 to establish transportation routes and assert control over East African territories.
Indian laborers who constructed the railway introduced their food traditions to Kenya, incorporating items like chapati and samosas into local cuisine.
The railway system transports cargo and passengers between major Kenyan cities, providing an alternative to road travel through diverse geographical regions.
Two male lions at Tsavo attacked and killed numerous railway workers during construction, halting progress until Colonel Patterson eliminated the threat.
