Mahé, Island in Indian Ocean, Seychelles

This is the largest landmass in Seychelles within the Indian Ocean, spreading across forested mountains, coastal plains, and numerous sandy shores. The terrain shows steep slopes inland, while flatter sections along the coast hold settlements, roads, and rows of palm trees.

European sailors explored this coastline from the early seventeenth century, but permanent settlement began only in the mid-eighteenth century under French leadership. Control later shifted to the British, who administered the territory until independence in the twentieth century.

This landmass holds Victoria, where everyday routines and regional customs appear in the small markets and residential quarters around the harbor. Creole influences show in architecture, food, and the conversations of residents who work and live here.

The international airport sits in the northern section and links the area to the rest of the world through daily connections. Local roads lead to most coastal zones and trailheads for hiking, with a rental car or bus proving useful.

Morne Seychellois National Park shelters the Jellyfish Tree, a plant species growing only in a few spots across this territory. This rare tree earned its name from the shape of its pink flowers, which recall jellyfish.
