Shoalwater Islands Marine Park

Shoalwater Islands Marine Park covers 6,540 hectares along Western Australia's coast, featuring limestone islands, coral reefs, and seagrass meadows. The protected area contains interconnected habitats that support diverse marine life throughout its waters and island landscapes.

The Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions established this protected area in 1990 to safeguard local marine ecosystems. This designation marked a turning point in protecting this valuable coastal region.

The Gnaarla Karla Booja people have maintained deep ties to this coastal region, incorporating the waters and islands into their ongoing traditional practices. These connections shape how locals and visitors understand and respect the area today.

Visitors can participate in snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and wildlife observation, typically through guided tours departing from the mainland to various islands. Conditions are most favorable during warmer months when water temperatures are comfortable and seas are generally calm.

Little penguins inhabit Penguin Island within the park and can be observed as they return to their burrows along the beach. Australian sea lions gather on nearby Seal Island throughout the year, adding remarkable diversity to the marine environment.
