Murdoch University, Public university in Perth, Australia
Murdoch University is a public higher education institution on the edge of Perth with a sprawling main campus on South Street. The site combines modern teaching buildings, research centers, a veterinary school, and large undeveloped areas of Australian bushland.
The institution opened for teaching in 1973 and took its name from Sir Walter Murdoch, a scholar from the University of Western Australia. It was at that time the second university in Western Australia.
The campus sits on traditional land of the Whadjuk and Binjareb Noongar people. Students often see kangaroos and native birds moving through natural bushland left intact between teaching buildings.
The main campus is located south of central Perth and can be reached by car or public transport. Visitors can walk through open areas of the grounds but should note that some buildings are accessible only to students and staff.
The campus houses the Australian National Phenome Centre, which conducts medical research using metabolic analysis. The veterinary school is the only one in all of Western Australia.
