Public Transport Centre

Public Transport Centre, Brutalist transportation building in East Perth, Australia

The Public Transport Centre is a transportation hub in East Perth built from brown brick and concrete with strong geometric forms throughout its design. Its angular volumes and raw materials create a striking visual composition that defines the local streetscape.

The building opened in 1976 during a period when Perth expanded its public infrastructure significantly. It represents the architectural style promoted by local architect Tony Brand that gained prominence across Western Australia at that time.

The building represents the architectural movement of brutalism that gained prominence in Western Australia during the 1960s and 1970s through local architect Tony Brand.

The facility operates as a major transport hub coordinating multiple bus services and passenger transfers throughout the area. Visitors can view the structure from the surrounding bitumen area, which is enclosed by wire fencing.

The structure is one of Perth's remaining examples of raw concrete brutalism and is often passed by without notice. Its design shows how this international post-war style was adapted and expressed in Western Australia.
