Goongoongup Bridge, Railway and pedestrian bridge in East Perth, Western Australia
Goongoongup Bridge is a railway and pedestrian bridge spanning the Swan River in East Perth, extending approximately 407 meters across the water. The structure carries two railway tracks and features a concrete design supported by eight substantial piers, with a dedicated pathway for walkers running alongside the main deck.
Construction of the bridge began in 1995 and replaced an older timber structure completed in 1932 that had served as the main crossing. This new construction marked an important upgrade for Perth's suburban railway electrification program.
The name Goongoongup comes from the Noongar language and refers to the Claisebrook area, where freshwater streams once flowed into the Swan River.
Access to the bridge is available from both sides, with clear pathways for pedestrians and cyclists running beneath the main rail deck. It is best to visit during quieter times when fewer trains pass through, allowing for a more pleasant crossing experience.
Between 2011 and 2013, major repairs were carried out after engineers detected ground movement at the eastern end of the structure. These stabilization works ensured the bridge maintained its structural integrity over time.
