Kuljak Island, Artificial island in Swan River, Western Australia
Kuljak Island is an artificial island in the Swan River positioned between Ron Courtney Island and Heirisson Island, east of Maylands Peninsula. The site has paved paths that connect different areas and provide access to observation points throughout the grounds.
The area functioned as a city waste disposal site until the early 1980s, then was transformed into an artificial island in 1997. This conversion involved connecting two channels to create wetland habitat and converting a former landfill into a public recreation area.
The island creates views toward Tranby House on the western shore, linking visitors to the architectural story of the Swan River area. These sight lines help people connect with the region's past as they walk through the space.
The island is accessible by car via Tidewater Way or by pedestrian bridge from Samphire Street. Paved pathways make it easy to walk around and reach different parts of the grounds.
The island was created through the conversion of a waste facility, showing how damaged land can be restored and reused. Visitors today see a natural habitat where an industrial site once stood.
