Northbridge, Inner city district in Perth, Australia
Northbridge is an inner-city district in Perth that stretches from William Street to Mitchell Freeway, located about one kilometer north of the central business district. The area features shops, offices, restaurants, and gathering spaces that form its streetscape.
The area began as freshwater swamps in the 1860s when convict labor drained the land to allow railway construction. This drainage project transformed the swampland into usable urban space.
Chinatown sits at the heart of this district with its red lanterns and narrow lanes filled with restaurants serving Asian cuisine alongside other international flavors. Walking through, you experience how different cultures have made the area their own through food, shopfronts, and the way locals and visitors move through the streets.
Northbridge Piazza and Russell Square are the main gathering places, where outdoor events happen regularly throughout the year. These public squares are easy to navigate and good starting points for exploring the area.
Many buildings from the 1890s gold rush era still stand in this district, including the former Great Western Hotel which operates today as the Brass Monkey Hotel. These surviving structures give the neighborhood its distinctive historical feel.
