Swan River Mechanics' Institute, Educational institute in Perth, Australia

The Swan River Mechanics' Institute building featured two levels with a concert hall and multiple activity rooms for community gatherings and educational purposes.

Established in 1851 as the first cultural center in Swan River Colony, the institute included a subscription library and natural history collection under president John Septimus Roe.

The institute functioned as a central meeting point where middle-class citizens gathered to read newspapers, discuss current events, and participate in educational activities.

Membership allowed access to an extensive collection of books, materials, and resources, though political discussions were not permitted within the institute.

The natural history specimens collected by the institute formed the foundation for what later became the Western Australian Museum's collection.
