The Playhouse Theatre, Theatre in Perth, Australia
The Playhouse Theatre is a theatre building in Perth designed with a traditional proscenium arch and two levels. It had a capacity of 427 seats and a stage measuring 10.2 meters wide for performances.
The theatre opened on August 22, 1956 with a performance of The Teahouse of the August Moon before 700 attendees. This opening event marked the beginning of the building's role as a major cultural venue in Western Australia.
The theatre served as home to the National Theatre Company until 1984, then hosted the Western Australian Theatre Company through 1990. These resident companies made the venue a center for contemporary drama in Perth.
The building is located on Pier Street next to St George's Cathedral on Church property. Visitors will find bar facilities and conference rooms available on site.
The main lobby displayed a mural created by local architect Iwan Iwanoff, adding artistic character to the entrance area. This handcrafted installation became a distinctive visual element that visitors would encounter upon arrival.
