Raine Square, Heritage site in central business district, Perth, Australia
Raine Square is a mixed-use complex in Perth's central business district situated between Murray, William, and Wellington Streets. The development combines modern construction with original heritage facades, housing retail shops, offices, and entertainment venues across its multiple levels.
The site originated in the 1960s when the University of Western Australia purchased properties including two historic hotels. It was named after Joe and Mary Raine and opened as a complex in 1986, later undergoing significant redevelopment starting in 2017.
The square mixes shops and offices with heritage buildings that show how Perth's architecture changed over time. Walking through, you notice how older structures blend with newer construction, creating layers of different eras.
The complex sits near Perth Underground station and has easy access via bus stops along William and Wellington Streets. Multiple entrances and ground-level connections make it simple to navigate and move between different areas.
When the last Piccadilly cinemas closed in 2013, the area lost movie theaters for years. The 2017 redevelopment reintroduced cinema venues to Perth's downtown, bringing back film entertainment to a central location.
