Gledden Building, Art Deco office building in Perth, Australia.
The Gledden Building is a seven-story office structure featuring Art Deco design, located where Hay Street and William Street intersect in Perth. The facade displays geometric patterns and ornamental concrete elements, while the ground floor houses a two-level retail arcade with office spaces filling the upper floors.
Construction began in 1937 and finished in 1938, designed by architect Harold Boas during a period of economic expansion in Western Australia. The building emerged at a time when the city was modernizing and adopting new architectural styles to reshape its urban landscape.
Artists created friezes showing regional plants and animals that decorate the facade, bringing local nature into the building's design. These artworks reflect how the community valued nature and craftsmanship in their urban spaces.
The building sits at a central intersection and is easy to find and approach on foot. You can view the architectural details from the street and explore the ground-level retail arcade at your own pace.
It is the only surviving high-rise Art Deco office building from the inter-war period in Perth and holds protected heritage status. Its rarity as a preserved example of this architectural era makes it an important record of the city's building traditions from that time.
